It happens all too often - you tell yourself you鈥檙e just going into town for a couple of drinks, but then end up staying out much longer than planned.

And as the night marches on you suddenly realise you鈥檙e absolutely starving because you appear to have forgotten all about dinner.

Now often a quick trip to Maccies will do the trick, but sometimes you want something that doesn鈥檛 get served in a paper bag or polystyrene tray.

Here are six places that serve food late, for the next time you get the munchies on a night out.

Rack and Dollar

Don't let anyone tell you eating's cheating

The Berry Street sports bar serves huge burgers, chicken strips, steaks, small plates and sides. A good place to play some pool, drink some cocktails, and then soak it all up with some tasty food before carrying on the night. Food is served until 10pm.

Salt Dog Slim鈥檚

For dogs, drinks and dancing

Salt Dog's, on Seel Street is known for its quirky cocktails and huge beer steins. It also - as its name suggests - serves up huge hot dogs.

Loaded with a choice of tasty toppings - think ketchup, American mustard, jalapenos, onions, and cheese, lots of cheese - these really do the job when you鈥檙e starting to flag (i.e. getting a bit drunk), and need a pick me up. The bar is open until 2am and it鈥檚 a case of once they鈥檙e gone they鈥檙e gone - but generally they last well into the night.

Those who are lucky enough, might also be able to get their hands on some nachos, but be warned - they sell out fast.

The Hub - Ale House and Kitchen

The Hub serves food until 10.30pm and there is plenty of seating, meaning you shouldn鈥檛 have to wait too long, if at all, for a table.

Alchemist

Go for the food, stay for the cocktails

One of the city鈥檚 newest and most popular bars, the Alchemist, on Brunswick Street serves food until 10.45pm Monday to Saturday, and 9.45pm on a Sunday.

Main plates include special fried chicken in a basket, fajitas and katsu curry, or you can order from the selection of gourmet sandwiches, burgers or sharing 鈥榯apatisers鈥?

If you can鈥檛 get a table straight away there鈥檚 plenty of space in the bar area to wait and order a drink from its extensive and impressive cocktail menu.

Miyagi

Wahaca's pork tacos would do the trick when you get the munchies on a night out

This Mexican bar and diner on College Lane serves tacos, burritos and street food until 11pm (10pm on Sundays). You can walk in without a booking at any time. If it鈥檚 busy, the staff will get you a drink at the bar and tell you when you鈥檙e table is ready.
