The latest annual sales figures, covering to November 2016, show that sometimes things stay the same. But they also show how new trends are starting to emerge ?not that any of this will be of any concern to Ford, that鈥檚 for sure. Why not? See below as we outline the top 5 best sellers of the last year.

1. Ford Fiesta. Sales: 120,525

It鈥檚 been eight years since the Fiesta was really changed, and yet here it is, top of the podium again. Look at the difference in sales figures between this and the next car. It鈥檚 easy to see why though. It鈥檚 a terrific supermini, with great handling and engine response, and it鈥檚 always sensible money. Same time next year?

2. Vauxhall Corsa. Sales: 77,100

Superminis from the big manufacturers are clearly where it鈥檚 at for volume sales. There is a good range of models, from the 202bhp VXR down to a sensible 74bhp 1.4-litre version. Everything is good ?price, performance, handling, even ride. Fully deserving of a podium finish.

3. Ford Focus. Sales: 70,545

See why Ford is happy? It鈥檚 got two of the three podium slots for volume sales, this time with the Focus. We might argue that the latest version is perhaps a little diluted from the previous versions, but it鈥檚 still a mighty fine car for the money. And if you have the money, then the Focus RS is simply awesome.

4. Volkswagen Golf. Sales: 69,492

VW nearly made the podium here, it wasn鈥檛 far behind with the Golf. Can you imagine a world without a range of Golfs in it? Even with Dieselgate and all the rest, the Golf remains a perennial favourite with a broad range of owners. The latest car is the seventh generation, and it gets smoother and slicker every time. Best hatchback in the world? We think it is.

5. Nissan Qashqai. Sales: 62,682

For ten years now Nissan鈥檚 Qashqai has been benchmarking the small SUV sector. It鈥檚 still the best-seller in the category, now in its second generation to keep things up to date. However, this is a highly competitive sector and whether it can hold on to fifth place next year, against competitors like the Seat Ateca, is very much in question.
