Merseyside Police are making enquiries after footage appears to show Everton player Ross Barkley being punched in a Liverpool bar.

The incident is understood to have happened at around 1am today.

In the CCTV footage the Premier League player can be seen speaking to an unidentified man, before he leans in and puts his hand on his shoulder, while talking in his ear.

Seconds later the man who he was speaking to throws a punch , which hits Ross Barkley in the face, knocking him backwards.

The man, who continues to throw punches in the direction of Barkley as he appears to be trying to get up after falling, is then dragged away by another man in the bar.

The ECHO understands that Ross Barkley refused medical treatment and neither police or ambulance were called to the scene.

A police spokesman said: 鈥淢erseyside Police is aware of footage online reportedly showing an assault in a bar in Liverpool city centre.

鈥淣o report of an assault has been received but officers are making enquiries to establish the circumstances of the incident.?/p>

Everton FC have been contacted for a comment.
