A man鈥檚 body was found in a St Helens canal this morning.
A 鈥渉uge鈥?emergency service presence surrounded a stretch of water, known as The Hotties, following reports 鈥渙f concern鈥?over a man鈥檚 safety.
Police arrived at the junction of St Helens Linkway and Burtonhead Road and made their way down to the nearby canal where they found the body.
Detectives are now treating the death as 鈥渦nexplained鈥?
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a forensics tent has been reportedly set up in the area while an investigation into the cause of death is carried out.
The identity of the man is also unconfirmed.
Ray Pownall, who drove past close to the scene, told the ECHO: 鈥淭here was a heavy build up of traffic due to the amount of emergency vehicles on the roundabout.
鈥淐ars were slowing down thinking it was an accident but I saw the police putting up a green tarpaulin.
鈥淎 young lady spotted the body in the water at around 8.15am this morning.?/p>
Residents in the area reported seeing a large number of officers close to the Mercure Hotel and a staff member told the ECHO they had seen police in attendance.
Officers were called just before 8.30am this morning and made their way to the scene alongside ambulance and fire crews.
Other eyewitnesses said fire crews were also putting on clothing to enter the canal and a body being 鈥減ulled out of the water鈥?
