Kirkby鈥檚 new cinema could open next year ?and its developer has promised that more big names will soon be announced for Kirkby town centre.

Town centre developer St Modwen has now exchanged contracts with Reel Cinemas for the 15,000 sq ft venue on the former library site in Newtown Gardens.

That scheme will also include three restaurants.

Once the operators of those restaurants are confirmed then St Modwen will put in a planning application. It hopes to have the development open next year.

Paul Batho, projects director at St Modwen, said the Reel contract 鈥渕arks a significant step forward in our development plans for Kirkby Town Centre鈥?

He added: 鈥淲e know that the people of Kirkby want more leisure amenities in the town and a new cinema will make a big difference in transforming the town. We are also in talks with several national operators who are interested in the leisure units and we hope to make further announcements soon.?/p>

Reel is one of the largest independent cinema operators in the UK.

Supermarket giant Asda is reported to be close to agreeing a deal to open a supermarket in Kirkby town centre.
