Gun shots were reportedly fired in the middle of a street in Kirkby last night.

Neighbours who live close to Shevington Park said they heard gunfire just before midnight.

They also said a police helicopter was hovering over their homes for about two hours afterwards.

A car on Saxon Way was covered by police as the area was cordoned off overnight.

Detectives confirmed they were called to the street at about 11.10pm following reports of a car being damaged.

Windows of a Volvo S60 had been smashed during the incident although officers say 鈥渇orensic enquiries are being carried out to establish what caused the damage鈥?

Stockbridge Village - man shot in hand

An investigation is now under way as scientific support teams search the street for clues.

Police are knocking on doors across the area and are hunting for CCTV near the location.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: 鈥淣obody was in the car at the time of the incident and nobody is believed to have been injured.?/p>

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the gun crime hotline on 0800 230 0600 or leave information, anonymously, with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

If this latest reported shooting is confirmed it will bring the total number of gun attacks on Merseyside to almost 90 in the last year - a rise of 30 incidents on the previous year.

It also comes just two days after a man was shot in Stockbridge Village .
