Former Liverpool boxing champion Lee Siner was blasted with a shotgun while his partner and baby sat just yards away in a car.

Lee Siner, a one-time amateur prodigy, was chased down the street by the gunman and shot three times in the back after leaving a home in Maberley View, Wavertree late last night.

Police were today exploring a number of theories behind the apparent underworld attack, which detectives confirmed was 鈥渢argeted鈥?

Siner, who was released from jail earlier this year after paying to have penalty points illegally wiped from his driving licence, was tipped for the top after becoming one of the top names at the city鈥檚 acclaimed Salisbury ABC ?the gym which has produced the likes of light-welterweight Olympian Tom Stalker.

But his fall from grace was compounded in 2010 when he was ambushed by three men in a city kebab house and stabbed in the arm, slashed in the leg and attacked with a crook lock.

Siner had been warned by detectives that he was in danger but refused to leave the city or accept protection.

When one of the attackers, city gangster Anthony Richardson, was jailed for eight years in 2011 it was said the bloodshed was revenge after Siner 鈥渒nocked out鈥?underworld crook James 鈥楶ancake鈥?Taylor in Garth prison in Leyland.

Pancake ?so-called because he 鈥渇lips鈥??was later jailed for nine year for his role in the attack at Kimos restaurant in Myrtle Street, which was described in court as an 鈥渦nderworld vendetta鈥?

Gangland sources told the ECHO that Siner had recently fallen out with another notorious city criminal.

But police said officers were still waiting to speak to the victim and that the motive for the shooting was unknown.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Shaw told the ECHO: 鈥淲e haven鈥檛 been able to speak to him to get a description of the attacker- and probably won鈥檛 be able to do so for a few days.

鈥淏ut his injuries aren鈥檛 life threatening. We鈥檙e currently speaking to his partner and residents.

鈥淲e believe it was a targeted attack, but at the moment we just don鈥檛 know what it鈥檚 about.?/p>

Siner was today being treated for his injuries in hospital where his condition was described as 鈥渟erious but stable鈥?

His frightened girlfriend called the police from inside the family car, with their 18-month-old baby in the back seat, shortly after 8pm.

A black Nissan car found burnt out in nearby Old Mill Lane is believed to be related to the shooting and the street, like Maberley View, was cordoned off.

Residents told the ECHO they heard 鈥渢hree bangs like fireworks鈥?ring out in the quiet cul-de-sac.

A neighbour said: 鈥淲e鈥檝e lived here for seven years, and nothing like this has ever happened.

鈥淵ou never think bangs will be gun shots, it鈥檚 a nice area.?/p>

Another resident said: 鈥淚 came back from work last night, and there were police everywhere.

鈥淚鈥檓 just glad the little baby is alright.?/p>
