Formed in 1974 and stretching from Kirkby to Halewood, Knowsley is home to one of Merseyside's most popular tourist attractions, Knowsley Safari Park. The borough has produced a string of sporting greats including Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard and ex-Everton midfielder Peter Reid. Other famous Knowsley natives include Sir Rex Harrison and playwright Alan Bleasdale, while former prime minister Harold Wilson was MP for Huyton. Knowsley is a centre for several key industries, employing tens of thousands of people.
